Nurse Educator Challenges in the 21st- Century and how to Overcome them
Role of
the Nurse Educator in the 21st-Century learning environment
The nurse educator is tasked with the role of teaching in aspects
relating to the profession. Student nurses are taught all the necessary
knowledge and skills1 which will contribute to assisting with the
services of health care. As part of teaching, nurse educators act as mentors to
guide and support students2 to transition into novice nurses. The nurse
educator must first acquire knowledge in advances in technology3,
and transmit this information to her students. Nurse educators must remain
current in research and changes in healthcare to be able to inform students
adequately. Further, nurse educators engage in policy and guidelines which
govern the practice of student nurses, and other nurses who aspire to progress
in their education.
Challenges associated with 21st-Cerntury nurse
educators are:
1.
Shortage
of Nurses5. Many nurses gravitate toward nurse specialties that
offer higher pay.
2.
Faculty
Shortage5: Faculty shortages poses a risk to keeping current with
the curriculum and the advances in nursing practice.
Instructional designs, Objectives,
and lesson plans can help overcome these challenges by the incorporation of
interactive games and learning materials6 which will stimulate
learning among students. Additionally, evidence-based practice and current research
added to teaching activities will also spark interest in motivating students to
learn.
